Program Spotlight: Smith Lodge

Missions Inc.Chemical Dependency

Opened in 1991 and serving 20 individuals at a time, Smith Lodge is a place where men and women struggling with homelessness and chronic addiction find the time and support needed to break the destructive cycles in their lives. By offering a sober living environment, access to resources including medical and mental health care, drug and alcohol treatment, employment and educational resources, and economic assistance, Smith Lodge makes it possible for residents to transition from long-term homelessness to stability and independence. The goal for every resident is to ensure that when they leave Smith Lodge, they leave with the resources, tools, and support necessary to maintain their sobriety and independence.

In addition to the provision of basic needs of housing, food, clothing, and assistance with transportation, Smith Lodge services include:

Needs Assessment and Goal Planning – Smith Lodge assists residents in identifying their goals and establishing a plan for achieving them. The Advocate and Program Manager hold regular goal planning meetings with all residents. Residents are required to set goals related to maintaining sobriety and addressing mental health care needs and are encouraged to seek professional services to assist in this. Residents are also encouraged to set goals related to housing, employment, education, medical care, and other areas of importance to them.

Advocacy for Goal Achievement – Smith Lodge assists residents in accessing services in the community to work towards the achievement of their personal goals. They do this by setting appointments, accompanying residents to appointments, and by offering advocacy, information and support.

Work Program – Smith Lodge has a work program with both paid and unpaid work assignments in order to provide structure and foster the development of employment skills.  All residents participate in the unpaid work program. Work Program jobs can include working at our affiliated nursing home, with the Facilities Director on grounds and building upkeep, or working with our resident carpenter in the creation and repair of furniture utilized by all of Missions Inc. Programs.

“Smith Lodge is most helpful in providing me with safety and security while I am working toward self-improvement and a better future for myself.”

Recreation and Group Activities – Smith Lodge provides opportunities for residents to participate in recreational activities, such as sporting or theatrical events and in-house groups and activities designed to provide support, information, and the ability to enjoy life in a sober environment.

Nursing Services – Smith Lodge provides nursing services to assist residents in addressing their health care needs. The Registered Nurse (RN) consultant completes a health care assessment and develops a medical plan for each resident. The RN consultant provides ongoing training for staff to implement each residents’ medical and medication plans.

AA & NA Meetings – Staff provides transportation assistance for residents to attend AA and NA meetings.  AA meetings are available on-site weekly. Residents may also attend AA, NA and CA meetings in the community. New Hope Alanon volunteers are also available to provide transportation to AA meetings seven days a week.
