Enhancing Quality of Life: The New Disc Golf Course at Missions Inc. Programs

In the Fall of 2023, the installation of a brand-new disc golf course began on our Plymouth campus. As we eagerly anticipate warmer weather, we also await the completion of the course—an exciting addition to our campus that promises to enhance the quality of life for our residents.

This project is the result of a collaborative effort spearheaded by Jon De St. Hubert, the Program Manager of Smith Lodge, and James Whitt, former Associate Director. The idea for the course emerged as a solution to utilize our beautiful campus grounds while providing a recreational activity accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities.

Here are some key reasons why the disc golf course is a valuable addition to our campus:

  1. Optimizing Unused Space: Our campus boasts extensive grounds, and the installation of the disc golf course transforms previously underutilized areas into vibrant spaces for recreation and relaxation.
  2. Inclusive Recreation: Disc golf is a recreational activity that appeals to a wide range of individuals, making it an ideal option for our diverse resident population. Regardless of age or skill level, everyone can participate and enjoy the game.
  3. Promoting Health and Fellowship: Exercise and social interaction are integral components of the recovery journey. The disc golf course not only encourages physical activity but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and community among our residents as they engage in friendly competition and teamwork.
  4. Accessible Entertainment: For residents without access to transportation or limited opportunities for recreational activities outside our campus, the disc golf course provides a fulfilling and enjoyable pastime right at their doorstep.

The realization of this project would not have been possible without the generous support and collaboration of our partners. We sincerely appreciate the expertise, resources, and dedication of Gotta Go Gotta Throw, the Minnesota Frisbee Association, and Boston Scientific in bringing this vision to life. Funding from a 2022 Boston Scientific grant to support healthy activities for our residents covered the cost of the baskets, while the Minnesota Frisbee Association and Gotta Go Gotta Throw donated concrete, basket locks, wood for tee boxes, and labor.

We eagerly look forward to seeing our residents out on the course this spring and summer, experiencing the growth and healing of this new recreational activity. Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to empower individuals on their journey towards a brighter future.
