Jim Steinhagen, former CEO of Missions Inc., passed away on May 16, 2026, following complications from pancreatic cancer. Jim served as CEO from November 2017 through December 2020, leading the organization through an important period of growth, transition, and investment in our future.
While Jim’s time at Missions Inc. was relatively brief, his impact was meaningful and lasting. He led with an uncommon combination of candor and compassion, bringing thoughtful leadership, steady guidance, and genuine care for both the mission and the people carrying it forward each day. Jim believed deeply in the dignity of every person who came through our doors, and his leadership reflected that belief in both large and small ways. His door was always open, to visitors and staff, but especially to residents, whom he valued with deep respect, kindness, and humanity.
Jim was not the kind of leader who remained distant from the day-to-day life of the organization. He was present. He often stopped by the programs with a plate of cookies or a bag of candy to share, simply to check-in with staff, chat with residents, or offer his appreciation for the good work being done each and every day. Jim had a way of making people feel welcome, appreciated, and connected.
Many of us also remember Jim for the warmth and humor he brought to daily life. Lunchtime conversations often drifted toward favorite television shows, especially Game of Thrones, or Jim’s well-known fondness for scary movies. He was also known to tell a few “big fish” stories, as his most favorite pastime was fishing. His beloved canine companion, Rocket, frequently accompanied Jim to work, becoming an enthusiastic ambassador of goodwill in much the same way Jim himself was. Rocket’s presence brought smiles to staff and residents alike, and together the two became a familiar and welcome part of campus life.
Before joining Missions Inc., Jim spent much of his career in leadership roles at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, where he helped advance recovery and behavioral health services and touched countless lives through his work. His commitment to service, recovery, and human dignity remained evident throughout his career and continued during his time at Missions Inc.
Those who worked alongside Jim remember a leader who was thoughtful, authentic, approachable, and deeply human. He carried himself with humility, listened carefully, and led with both wisdom and heart. Even during challenging moments or when he had to make difficult decisions, Jim brought a calm and steady presence that helped others feel supported and heard.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim’s wife, Lynae, his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. Jim leaves behind a legacy in the recovery community that will continue to be felt for years to come.
A public celebration of life will be held on June 9, 2026, from 11:00 – 1:00 at The American Swedish Institute, 2600 Park Avenue, Minneapolis.
