This year has brought so much uncertainty to our community.
I’ve spent more time than I can quantify wondering where my time and energy would best be spent as I watch neighbors, colleagues, and friends struggling at an accelerated rate this year. At times I’ve felt overwhelmed. Others, almost helpless.
But one change left me feeling empowered: shifting focus. Narrowing my perspective from the big, overwhelming picture to the tangible one in front of me. Realizing that the most meaningful impact we can make is on the challenge closest to us, awaiting our attention.
Christopher, a resident on our Plymouth campus, embodies the kind of person I would like to be. He’s watchful, kindhearted, and generous with his gifts. When excitement around campus increased as our anniversary event neared in October, Christopher was patiently waiting to see where his talents would be best utilized.
Residents of our housing programs were ready for the party. Excited for the volunteer t-shirt, thrilled at the chance to demonstrate leadership, over 30 residents volunteered for the festivities. From hosting program tours to ensuring the food didn’t run out, the event simply would not have been successful without resident support.
Christopher was ready to share his gifts.
Time and again, when event guests remarked on how helpful and friendly the volunteers were, they described Christopher:
“He noticed my mother had limited mobility and carried three chairs so we could all watch the Armstrong performances!”
“He shared his story with us as we sat by the campfire.”
“He greeted us warmly and asked us if he could help us find anything.”
Christopher was one of many. Every resident who helped at the event gave it their all – shared their expertise about the programs, worked hard to make their spaces look welcoming, carried themselves with confidence and warmth – without being asked.
But that’s the point, isn’t it? When we are one of many, and we focus our attention on the task in front of us, we can move mountains. Christopher and his fellow residents became a small legion of kind, welcoming faces who made our biggest event of the last three decades a success. Guests left with a true understanding of Missions Inc. Programs and how we impact the community. The kind of understanding that cannot be fabricated.
So, where do you come in? Well, I hope that (like me), the story of Christopher and his small community of friends inspires you to take action – now. On the opportunity in front of you. Give of yourself and your talents and gifts where you know they will have the biggest impact.
At Missions Inc. Programs, you can be certain your investment is meaningful. All gifts go toward supporting Christopher and his community who care so deeply about one another and the future health of our organization – their home. Your gift supports our Resident Advisory Council who, after giving their all at the event, decided that serving others was an important part of their leadership mission. Later this month, they will volunteer at another local organization to give back to their community from the resources they have: time and physical ability.
After the event, as Christopher helped me take down tents, I was flooded with emotion. This person, without my asking, gave of himself wholly and completely with no fanfare. How wonderful would this world be if we could all be like Christopher, even just once in a while?
If you can give of yourself this year, no matter what your gifts look like, please consider joining Christopher in making a difference at the most local and immediate level.
