SUBSTANCE USE &
HOUSING SERVICES

Missions Inc. provides housing and supportive services to men and women experiencing addiction and chronic chemical dependency, and withdrawal management to men, women and adolescents over the age of 13 who are experiencing intoxication and/or withdrawal. Services are provided to eligible residents and clients regardless of ability to pay. With the disease of addiction, there exists a physical and/or psychological addiction to a mood altering chemical which, when removed, results in withdrawal symptoms—that can be life threatening—and an obsession with obtaining more of the substance.

Chemical dependency interrupts a person’s ability to function on a day to day basis and makes them more susceptible to other physical ailments such as infections, anemia, diseases of the liver, heart, brain and organs, and to cancer, particularly of the liver and throat.

Fortunately, Chemical Dependency is a treatable disease if symptoms are identified and the addicted person seeks help. Successful recovery depends on abstinence and the development of a healthy approach to life’s problems. Even though chemically dependent people generally have a relapse rate of over 50%, many people achieve long periods of sobriety sufficient to maintain jobs, families, and health.

HISTORY

Chemical Dependency has grown to be one of the number one problems in the United States according to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. At the time of our founding as Union City Mission in 1895, ministering to men who were experiencing addiction included offering a warm place to stay, a bowl of soup and a sermon. Alcoholics used to be seen by society as people who lacked the will to stop drinking, and even after the establishment of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935, it wasn’t until three decades later that the federal government recognized addiction as a disease.

In the 1940s, Missions Inc, then known as Union City Mission, opened the first chemical dependency treatment program in Minnesota and was instrumental in creating what has become known as the Minnesota Model for Chemical Dependency Treatment, which continues to be used in treatment centers worldwide.
