Look For the Helpers

Missions Inc.Featured, Mission Weekly

In the aftermath of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Fred Rogers, the host of the children’s show, ‘Mr. Rogers Neighborhood’, comforted American children by encouraging them to “look for the helpers.”  He explained that in times of trouble, it is always comforting to realize “that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

― Fred Rogers

In our work at Missions Inc., we are often assisting people who are struggling with very difficult issues, and it is sometimes challenging work. It can be hard to know how best to help when someone has experienced a domestic assault or is struggling to keep their sobriety. But, one of the things that we can take comfort in is the knowledge that we get to be the helpers. And, we recognize what a privilege that is.

You can be a helper, too.

Missions Inc. Programs provides housing and social services to people experiencing chemical addiction, homelessness and domestic violence. Through six human services programs, we assist over 3,000 people annually using evidence-based programming from a person-first perspective.

“I’ve worked here a long time and there is one thing I know for sure – this place is special. It is a good feeling when you know that you can help someone through a difficult time. And, we do this every day.”
